Women's Track & Field's Zampell Wins Javelin, Jorgensen Sets Two Records at UCF Twilight
Women have three Top-10 showings
Orlando, Fla. (May 10, 2009) - Nova Southeastern University's men's and women's track and field teams wrapped up regular season competition at the UCF Twilight on Sunday at the UCF Track and Field Complex. The men's team had six place among the Top-10, including men's javelin winner Bernard Pierre (So., Fort Lauderdale, Fla.). The women's team saw three Top-10 finishes, including women's javelin winner Erin Zampell (Fr., Naples, Fla.). For the men, Pierre posted a 163'2" (49.73m) winning throw in the javelin. John Crute (Jr., Miami, Fla.) was second in the javelin with a 146'9" (44.72m) mark.
Pierre also took second in the shot put, recording a 40'6.25" (12.35m) throw.
On the track, Michael Wilson (Sr., Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) was sixth in the 200 meters and also finished 11th in the 100 meters. Wilson finished the 200 meters in a time of 21.47 and clocked 10.75 in the 100 meters. In the 800 meters, Chris Jacob (So., Naples, Fla.) and Joseph Pena (So., Jacksonville, Fla.) placed seventh and 10th, respectively. Jacob ran 2:02.26, while Pena crossed the finish line in a time of 2:07.28.
For the women, Zampell registered a winning throw of 115'5" (35.17m) in the javelin. She also threw 36'7.75" (11.17m) in the shot put for a sixth-place finish.
On the track, Tara Haddock (Jr., Lecanto, Fla.) was sixth in the 800 meters with a time of 2:19.31. Meanwhile, Kyley Jorgensen (Fr., Wellington, Fla.) had a pair of school records in the 100 and 200 meters. Jorgensen ran a school record time of 12.03 in the 100 meters, taking 0.07 off of her previous record. She then raced 25.20 in the 200 meters, a 0.05 improvement over her previous record. Jorgensen was also 14th in both events.
NSU's next meet will be the NCAA Division II National Championships in San Angelo, Texas. Currently, Jorgensen and Wilson are the only two Sharks to have met provisional qualifying standards.
