Women's Cross Country Places 14th at Mountain Dew Invitational

athletic pic Gainesville, Fla. (Sept. 18, 2009) - The Nova Southeastern University men's and women's cross country teams races in the Mountain Dew Invitational on Friday evening at the UF Golf Course. The men's team finished sixth out of 18 teams. The women placed 14th out of 23 teams.

"With both teams, there was good competition," said head coach Bryan Hapogian. "Both the men and women were able to see where we are in the conference and what we need to work on."

On the women's side, Krystal Porter (Sr., Raytown, Mo.) covered the 5K course in a team-best 19:50.71 and placed 50th. Tara Haddock (Jr., Citrus Springs, Fla.) finished 61st with a time of 20:11.32, while Juliana Tabares (Fr., West Palm Beach, Fla.) was 119th with a time of 21:36.27. Alice Henley ran 22:01.71 and placed 130th. Kristina Williams (Fr., Fort Worth, Texas) was right behind in 133rd place with a personal-record time of 22:12.58. Rounding out the Sharks was StacyAnn Daley in 214th with a time of 25:47.82

NSU compiled 406 points. Host Florida won the women's team title with 18 points. Florida's Charlotte Browning won the women's race with a time of 17:25.08.

Agustin Rey (Jr., Coral Springs, Fla.) led the men's team, covering the 8K course in a personal record time of 26:15.80 and placing 23rd. Brendan Chwalek (Fr., Sellersburg, Ind.) finished 41st with a time of 26:59.30, while Jonathan Junkins (So., Lecanto, Fla.) ran a personal record time of 27:12.50 and was 47th. Joe Peña (Jr., Jacksonville, Fla.) cross the finish line in a time of 27:22.00 and placed 55th, while Kevin Meagher (Fr., Mansfield, Mass.) was right behind in 57th with a time a time of 27:23.80. Mike Greiner (Fr., Palm Coast, Fla.) clocked 28:10.40 and was 86th. John Besharat (Jr., Miami, Fla.) ran 28:16.30 and placed 92nd. Robert Rowe (Fr., Coral Gables, Fla.) set a new 8K personal record with a time of 28:28.60 and placed 98th. Michael Whitehead (Fr., Florence, Ky.) was 116th and covered the course in 28:58.50. Nico Crecco (Fr., Mendon, N.Y.) placed 173rd and ran 32:26.70, while Chris Jacob (So., Naples, Fla.) crossed the finish line in a time of 34:54.10 and finished 187th. Rounding out the Sharks was Ivan Almanza (Fr., Hollywood, Fla.) and Kevin Yarbrough (Fr., Addison, Ill.). Almanza ran 35:40.00 and was 190th and Yarbrough was 193rd with a time of 37:10.80.

The Sharks totaled 170 points. Florida won the men's team crown with 20 points. Meanwhile, Embry-Riddle's Evans Kirwa registered a race-winning time of 24:21.10.

NSU returns to action on Friday, Oct. 2 at the flrunners.com Invitational 10 at Chain of Lakes Park in Titusville, Fla. The women's 5K race is scheduled to go off at 6 p.m., while the men's 5K race is set for 6:25 p.m.
