NSU Women's Basketball Gives Back to the Community
The NSU women's basketball teams helps with local Boys and Girls Club
Fort Lauderdale, Fla. (Oct. 8, 2009) -- The Nova Southeastern University women's basketball team recently got involved in the community with the Jim and Jan Moran Boys and Girls Club of Deerfield Beach, Florida. Over the course of two weekends on Sept. 19 and Oct. 3, the Shark women's basketball team conducted a series of fundamental skills sessions with the local Deerfield Beach Boys and Girls Club. On Sept. 19, the women's basketball team hosted the skill session at the Arena at the Don Taft University Center, while the second session occurred at the onsite Boys and Girls Club facility in Deerfield Beach.
Head Coach Marilyn Rule, her two assistants and 10 members of the NSU women's team, conducted the two fundamental sessions which included instruction in passing, dribbling, catching and shooting. Approximately 40 kids from both the Deerfield Beach and the Lauderhill Boys and Girls Club were in attendance.
At the conclusion of the skill sessions, the NSU players and coaches held an open forum of question and answers to the inquisitive bunch of young kids. The NSU student-athletes answered tons of questions including how to balance athletic and academic responsibility.
"I believe this was a very good opportunity for our student-athletes to get involved in the community, especially with the boys and girls club" assistant coach Ali Rousseau said. "Our student-athletes can be positive influences on these young boys and girls, but it also helps our student-athletes in developing a sense of community involvement. It was a great experience for both the coaching staff and our athletes and we had a great time working with this great group of kids."
