#16 NSU Wins Two More Matches In Shark Classic
Sharks Defeat Oakland City and Michigan Tech
FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. (Sept. 5, 2009) The #16 Nova Southeastern University volleyball team captured two wins as host of the 4th annual Shark Classic in play on Saturday. The Sharks defeated Oakland City 3-0 (25-11, 25-12, 25-10) before beating Michigan Tech 3-1 (25-19, 17-25, 25-16 and 25-18) in the evening. The two wins improve NSU's record to 6-2 on the season. "It's nice to go 4-0 in our own tournament," said NSU head coach Steve Wilcosky. "This is the first year that we have gone undefeated in the Shark Classic, which is a big thing for us. Lucia (Cizmarova) had a huge match playing on the outside. With our depth this year, we can do different things and give teams different looks. We just need to keep on keeping on."
The Sharks came out firing in their first set vs. Michigan Tech, hitting .233 as a team in the 25-19 win. Sophomore outside hitter Lucia Cizmarova (Bratislava, Slovak Republic) posted five kills while senior outside hitter Jenerra McGruder (Euless, Tex.) chipped in with three. Michigan Tech was held to a negative hitting percentage at -.061.
NSU struggled in the second set, falling 25-17. The Sharks were held to a match low .097 attack percentage but still had four kills from freshman middle blocker Carly Perschnick (Dwight, Ill.).
Nova Southeastern rebounded in the third set, running away from the Huskies 25-16. Cizmarova once again led the Sharks with four kills. Junior libero Kathleen Yony (Miami, Fla.) had nine digs in the set.
The Sharks put away the match with a 25-18 fourth set victory. McGruder and Perschnick tied for the team lead with three kills. NSU hit .258 as a team.
For the match, NSU out-hit Michigan Tech .252 to .123. The Sharks had 12 more kills, three more assists, three more aces, six more digs and three more blocks. Cizmarova tallied a team high 14 kills, followed by Perschnick with 12 and McGruder with 11. Senior setter Valia Petrova (Sofia, Bulgaria) had three kills, 37 assists and three blocks in the match.
Earlier in the day, the Sharks dismantled Oakland City in a convincing 3-0 victory. NSU out-hit the Lady Oaks .362 to .000 and didn't hit less than .303 in any set. Cizmarova recorded a team high 11 kills while sophomore outside hitter Anabely Escarpita (Boca Raton, Fla.) had eight kills and a .429 attack percentage. Sophomore middle blocker Molly Sigerich (Downers Grove, Ill.) followed with seven kills.
NSU travels to Pensacola, Fla. to face UWF in the West Florida Regional Crossover on Thursday, September 10th at 7pm.
