Women's Tennis Opens Competition at C.L. Varner Memorial Invitational
Sharks get one doubles win and two Flight B singles victories
Winter Park, Fla. (Oct. 9, 2009) - The Nova Southeastern University women's tennis team opened play at the C.L. Varner Memorial Invitational on a hot Friday at the Tiedtke Tennis Courts at Rollins. The Sharks totaled four wins on the day, including one in doubles play, two in Flight B singles and one in Flight A consolation. Mary Crider (Sr., Georgetown, Texas) and Paige Lindsley (Jr., Albuquerque, N.M.) opened the day's competition with an 8-6 win over Rollins' Bradleigh Lore and Allie Steele. Crider and Lindsley now face Jillian O'Neill and Olivia Howlett of Hillsborough Community College in the second round on Saturday.
In the Flight B singles, both Elisa Leeder (Sr., Eisenhuettenstadt, Germany) and Daria Egorova (Jr., Obninsle, Russia) came away with first-round wins. Leeder downed Florida Southern's Nora Baertschi 6-2, 6-3 to advanced to the second round. However, in the second round, Leeder defaulted to Nachell Proctor of Hillsborough Community College due to an illness. Meanwhile, Egorova cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 defeat over Florida Southern's Amanda Carns in the first round. However, she fell 6-2, 6-0 to Armstrong Atlantic State's Kathleen Henry in the second round.
Karolina Porizkova (Sr., Prostejov, Czech Republic) registered the Sharks' fourth win. After falling 6-2, 6-0 to Armstrong Atlantic State's Gabriella Kovacs in the first round of Flight A singles, Porizkova rebounded in the Flight A consolation bracket. She downed Barry's Juliet Serabian 6-3, 6-0 en route to advancing to the second round in the consolation bracket. Porizkova will face Florida Southern's Veronika Kovacikova, who won her first round consolation match 6-2, 7-5 over Palm Beach Atlantic's Natalie Aleman.
NSU is back in action at the C.L. Varner Memorial Invitational on Saturday. Play begins with doubles at 8:30 a.m.
