Softball Down No. 22 Florida Southern 2-0 For First NCAA Postseason Victory
Sharks face Valdosta State at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday
Valdosta, Ga. (May 8, 2009) - Sixth-seeded Nova Southeastern University softball defeated third-seeded and No. 22 nationally-ranked Florida Southern 2-0 in the opening round of the NCAA South Regional Tournament in Valdosta, Ga., on Friday afternoon at the VSU Softball Complex. The win marked the Sharks first-ever postseason win in their NCAA history. NSU now advances to play the winner of the Valdosta State-Tampa game on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. Winner of that game automatically advances to Sunday's Championship game. Florida Southern will face the loser of Valdosta-Tampa on Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
NSU got out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth. Jessica Hernandez (Miami, Fla., Jr.) laced a stand-up double down the left field line to lead off the inning. A bunt by Brittney Lamb (West Palm Beach, Fla.) in the next at-bat caught the Florida Southern defense off-guard. Lamb's bunt squirted through the right side and into the outfield, allowing Hernandez to score from second.
The Sharks recorded their second run in the sixth. April Donachie (Orlando, Fla., Sr.) sent an RBI single up the middle, driving in a speedy Noemi Luciani (Miami, Fla., Jr.) from second.
Lexi Sarradet (Miami, Fla., So.) hurled a complete game shutout. She allowed four hits and struck out four in seven innings of work.
Brittany Minton gave up two runs and eights hits in seven innings. She also had two strikeouts.
Both Donachie and Lamb were 2-for-3 from the plate with one RBI. Patty Rivero (Miami, Fla., Jr.) was 2-for-2.
