Women's Soccer's Hernandez Named First-Team All-SSC
Hernandez led Sharks with 11 points, four goals and two game-winning goals in 2009
Orlando, Fla. (Nov. 5, 2009) - Nova Southeastern University women's soccer midfielder Alexis Hernandez (Jr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) was selected to the All-Sunshine State Conference First-Team, it was announced by the conference on Thursday. Hernandez is one of 11 players named First-Team All-SSC and one of 25 out of the SSC to receive All-Conference honors.Hernandez finished the 2009 season as NSU's leader in points (11), goals (4) and game-winning goals (2). She was also one of two players on the team with three assists. Hernandez played in all 15 games, starting in 14. She registered three points in the Sharks' SSC wins at both Barry and Eckerd. Additionally, she had the game-winners at Barry and at Eckerd.
An NSU player has been named All-SSC for the last five seasons. Hernandez is just one of four players in the program's history to collect First-Team All-SSC honors.
Also named to the 2009 All-SSC First-Team are Florida Tech's Teresa Brantley (forward), Melissa Pyles (goalkeeper) and DeeDee Newland (at-large); Lynn's Melissa Ortiz (forward); Rollins' Leah Hirsch (defense), Rachel Jakubowski (midfield), Charlotte Murrell (defense) and Meagan Thomas (defense); and Saint Leo's Hannah Beard (forward) and Sara Macko (midfield).
Selected to the All-SSC Second-Team are Rollins' Chelsea Brady (forward) and Michelle Dillingham (goalkeeper); Florida Southern's Jackie Bachteler (midfield), Princess Haley (forward), Alex Hoover (midfield); Barry's Melissa Madrid (forward); Florida Tech's Ann-Marie Helgestad (defense), Sara Lewis (midfield) and Brittany Rainbow (at-large); Lynn's Mindy DeCara (defense); Saint Leo's Dari Alcantara (at-large) and Francesca Williams (defense).
Both Saint Leo forward Pia Soesemann and Lynn midfielder Brittany Evernden were honorable mentions.
The SSC also announced its annual awards on Thursday. Brantley was tabbed Player of the Year and Offensive Player of the Year. Thomas was named Defensive Player of the Year. Rollins' Tony Amato was picked as the Coach of the Year. Madrid earned Freshman of the Year honors.
