Women's Soccer Brauher and Nowland Named ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District
Brauher selected to the First-Team, Nowland a Second-Team honoree
Fort Lauderdale, Fla. (Oct. 30, 2009) Two Nova Southeastern University women's soccer players were selected to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District 3 Teams as presented by College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Elizabeth Brauher (Sr., Hilo, Hawaii) was named the First-Team, while Lindsey Nowland (So., Cape Coral, Fla.) earned a spot on the Second-Team.With her First-Team Academic All-District selection, Brauher is now eligible for Academic All-America honors, which will be announced on Nov. 17.
It is the first time in program history in which two Sharks have received Academic All-District honors in the same season. Additionally, it is the third-straight year in which a Shark has been named First-Team Academic All-District. Hayley Oligane and Stephanie Quinones garnered First-Team Academic All-District honors in 2007 and 2008, respectively.
Brauher was one of four midfielders to be named to the First-Team. She has started in all 14 games during the 2009 season. Brauher leads the team with four assists and has tallied three goals, including the game-winner in the 2-0 win at Spring Hill on Sept. 13. She was the Sunshine State Conference's Player of the Week on Oct. 5 after a one goal, one assist performance in the Sharks' 3-2 victory over Tampa. A two-time Dean's List honoree, Brauher is currently pursuing a Master's of Public Health. She graduated from NSU in May 2009 with a 4.0 grade point average and her bachelor's in psychology.
Nowland was among the four defenders selected to the Second-Team. She has helped anchor NSU's defense that's recorded five shutouts. Nowland has made 14 starts on the back line and has played in 1,166 minutes. She recorded her first-career goal as NSU topped Palm Beach Atlantic on Sept. 16. Nowland's goal was also the game-winner. Majoring in biology, Nowland's been named to the Dean's List twice and currently maintains a 3.97 grade point average.
NSU's season continues on Tuesday with the first round of the SSC Tournament. The Sharks, seeded fifth in the tournament, will travel to fourth-seed Saint Leo. Winner of the NSU/Saint Leo game advances to face top-seed Rollins in the semifinals on Friday, Nov. 6.
