NSU Wins Shark Invitational For Fifth Consecutive Victory

Sharks Defeated Rollins By One Shot

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. (Oct. 13, 2009) - The Nova Southeastern University women's golf team won as host of the NSU Shark Invitational for the second consecutive year, held at the par 72, 6,163 yard Palmer Course at PGA National. The Sharks defeated Rollins by one stroke to claim the team title.

"I am proud of the way our women played," said NSU head coach Kevin Marsh. "Our entire team finished inside the top ten showing the great depth we have. This was our first opportunity to play against a Division II field and regional competition. We hope to continue to build on this momentum and finish the fall season solid."

Junior All-American Taylor Collins (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) and two-time NCAA Division II National Player of the Year Sandra Changkija (Orlando, Fla.) led the charge for the Sharks by tying for second place, finishing with matching two over-par 146's. Junior Fredrika Hakansson (So., Coral Springs, Fla.) improved the most among all NSU players in the final round, moving into sixth place (148) with a final round 71. Three-time All-American Maria Garcia-Austt (Sr., Montevideo, Uruguay) came in eighth place (150) while freshman Abbey Gittings (Tamworth, England) tied for ninth place (151).

Rollins' Joanna Coe won individual medalist honors, finishing at five under-par (139). Rollins' Joanna Vargas (147) and Indianapolis' Lyndsay McBride (147) also finished in the top five.

Barry (614) came in third place while Indianapolis (628) and Florida Southern (629) rounded out the top five teams. Embry-Riddle (639), Saint Leo (652), Lynn (656), Seminole CC (656), and Northwood-Fla. (658) finished in the top ten. Florida Tech (677), Pfeiffer (687) and Rend Lake CC (697) were also in competition.

The win marked the Sharks' fifth consecutive win and their 10th victory in their last 12 tournaments, which included NSU's first NCAA Division II National Championship in program history.

The Sharks return to action at the Ross Resorts Invitational on Monday, October 26th at Pinehurst, N.C.
