NSU Finishes In Fifth Place As Hosts Of Shark Invitational
Sharks Led By Sophomore Ben Vertz
PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. (Oct. 13, 2009) Barry University overcame a five shot deficit to defeat Lynn University in the final round of play at the NSU Shark Invitational, hosted by Nova Southeastern University at the par 72, 6,806 yard Haig Course at PGA National on Tuesday afternoon.Barry (850) overtook Lynn (853) for the tournament title. The Buccaneers finished 14 under-par as a team while Lynn was 11 under-par. Indianapolis (870), Oglethorpe (888) and Nova Southeastern (893) rounded out the top five. Embry-Riddle (895), Johnson and Wales (896), St. Edward's (897), St. Thomas (902) and Pfeiffer (908) were in the top ten. Northwood-Fla. (910), Florida Tech (916) and Post (934) were also in competition.
Barry's Chris Carlin (208) posted a final round tournament low score of 66 to take the individual title. Lynn's duo of Patricio Salem and Steven Brame tied for second place with matching 211's. Indianapolis' Blair Webb (214) came in fourth place while Embry-Riddle's Jackson Koert and Barry's Guillermo Pumarol tied for fifth place (215).
"After graduating two multi-year All-Americans, I understand it will take us the entire fall season to gain experience," NSU head coach Kevin Marsh said. "Our goal is to improve each tournament and be playing our best as the fall and spring season progress."
Sophomore Ben Vertz (Coral Springs, Fla.) was the highest NSU team finisher at 25th place (221). Junior Jack Bartlett (Worthing, England) was right behind in 26th place (222) while junior Michael Moore (Herts, England) came in a tie for 30th place (224). Seniors Peter Kolosvary (Safety Harbor, Fla.) and Byron White (Bradenton, Fla.) came in 39th (226) and 59th place (236) respectively.
Senior Bobby Bode (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) had the highest finish of any NSU golfer competing as an individual, posting a 220 to finish in a tie for 19th place. Junior Diego Lobo (Rio de Janiero, Brazil) tied for 26th with a 222 while freshman Robert Galbreath (Huntington Valley, Pa.) came in 67th place (240).
The Sharks will travel to Ocoee, Fla. to participate in the Rollins College Invitational on Monday, October 26th.
