#21 NSU Splits SSC Doubleheader With #12 Tampa
Fiers and Albury Combine To Shutout Tampa In Game One
FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. (Mar. 22, 2009) Led by the pitching of Michael Fiers and Sean Albury, the #21 Nova Southeastern University Sharks shutout #12 University of Tampa in game one en route to a doubleheader split in Sunshine State Conference action at the NSU Baseball Complex on Sunday afternoon. The Sharks record is now 24-6 overall, 2-4 in SSC play while Tampa is now 23-9 and 4-2 in SSC play.Fiers (Sr., Pompano Beach, Fla.) pitched eight innings for the win, allowing only six hits while striking out seven and walking just one batter. His victory over the Spartans improves his record to 7-1 on the season.
Leftfielder J.D. Martinez (Jr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) led the Sharks at the plate, going 2-4 with a home run, a run scored and four RBI's. Martinez leads the Sunshine State Conference with a .529 average and twelve home runs.
The Sharks struck first, scoring a single run on a sacrifice fly by first baseman Riaan Spanjer-Furstenburg (Jr., Coral Springs, Fla.).
Martinez padded the Sharks lead in the sixth inning, following a Rhys Roberts (Jr., Parkland, Fla.) single with a two-run homer to dead centerfield. He struck again in the seventh inning, hitting a two RBI single up the middle to score Chris Hamper (Fr., Melbourne, Fla. and Jonathan Escarza (Fr., Miami, Fla.) to make it 5-0.
Pete Simon (Sr., Lake Worth, Fla.) scored an insurance run for the Sharks in the eighth inning.
Closer Sean Albury (So., Nassau, Bahamas) closed out the game with out a hit allowed in the ninth inning.
The Sharks dropped the second game, losing 14-3. Hamper and second baseman Dexter Butler (Sr., Key West, Fla.) led NSU at the plate with three hits apiece. Butler accounted for all three of the Sharks runs with home runs in the first and third innings.
NSU will host Palm Beach Atlantic at 6 pm on Tuesday, March 24th at the NSU Baseball Complex.
