Sharks Starter Isaac Hicks Wins Fifth Straight Decision

FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. (Mar. 17, 2009)  Led by the starting pitching of Isaac Hicks and the bat of leftfielder J.D. Martinez, the Nova Southeastern University Sharks defeated Franklin Pierce University 6-2 in action at the NSU Baseball Complex on Tuesday evening. The win improves the Sharks record to 22-5 on the season and extends their home winning streak to 13 games. Franklin Pierce falls to 6-7.

Hicks (So., Ft. Myers, Fla.) pitched six and one-thirds innings in his first start of the season, allowing only two runs on five hits. He struck out four and walked just one. Coming into the game, Hicks had pitched nine and two-thirds innings without allowing an earned run. His victory over the Ravens improves his record to 5-0 on the season.

Martinez (Jr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) went 2-4 at the plate with a home run, three runs batted in and two runs scored. Coming into the game Martinez led the Sunshine State Conference with a .535 average and ten home runs.

A two-run homer by Martinez put the Sharks on the board first in the bottom of the first inning. A RBI double in the top of the third inning by Franklin Pierce's Kevin Rivers cut the Sharks lead in half.

The Sharks added to their lead in the bottom of the third inning, scoring runs on RBI singles from Riaan Spanjer-Furstenburg (Jr., Coral Springs, Fla.) and Robert Mesa (Fr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.).

Franklin Pierce added a run on a solo home run by Jacob Ferreira in the 6th inning.

Nova Southeastern scored an insurance run on an infield single by Josh Leo (So, Pembroke Pines, Fla.) in the seventh inning.

Zach North (So., Miami, Fla.) and Sean Albury (So., Nassau, Bahamas) combined to shut out the Ravens for the final two and two-thirds innings.

Freshman centerfielder Chris Hamper (Melbourne, Fla.) went 3-4 with three runs scored for NSU out of the leadoff spot. Mesa also had multiple hits with a run scored and a RBI.

NSU begins a three-game SSC series at 6 pm vs. University of Tampa on Friday, March 20th at the NSU Baseball Complex.
