Fiers Goes The Distance, Allowing Only Three Hits While Striking Out 13 Batters

BOCA RATON, Fla. (Mar. 12, 2009) A solo home run by Kyle Holloway in the bottom of the eighth inning was all Lynn University's baseball team needed to defeat No. 8 Nova Southeastern University and snap the Sharks 13-game winning streak. Lynn's Dan Wright pitched a two-hit complete game shutout to out-duel NSU starter Michael Fiers (Sr., Pompano Beach, Fla.), who allowed three hits, one run and struck out 13 in a complete game effort. Wright improved to 6-1 on the mound while Fiers falls to 6-1. The Fighting Knights move to 18-6 overall and pick up their first win in Sunshine State Conference play (1-3) while Nova Southeastern falls to 21-3 and 0-1 in SSC play.

Lynn threatened in the opening inning, getting runners on second and third with two outs but couldn't get a run across home plate as Fiers struck out the side in the frame to keep the Knights' bats at bay.

Wright would hold the Sharks hitless through four and one-thirds innings before shortstop Dale Alberto (Sr., Davie, Fla.) singled to right center field. He faced the minimum amount of batters until the seventh when NSU got a walk from second baseman Dexter Butler (Sr., Key West, Fla.) and single by first baseman Riaan Spanjer-Furstenburg (Jr., Coral Springs, Fla.). Wright ended the rally as he induced a weak fly ball to center field.

Lynn went down in order until Holloway's heroics in the eighth. The Deerfield Beach, Fla., native worked Fiers to a 3-0 count before the lanky starter fought back for two strikes. Holloway took the 3-2 outside corner fastball and cleared the fence in right field to put Lynn on top 1-0.

Fiers escaped another jam later in the inning, striking out a Lynn batter with the bases loaded to avoid any further damage.

Wright entered the top of the ninth and set down the Sharks one-two-three with a fly out, ground out and pop-up to first to end the game while earning his first career complete game shutout.

NSU closes out their three-game series with Lynn on Saturday, March 14, with a noon double-header in Boca Raton, Fla.
