#8 NSU Tops Bloomfield To Win 13th Consecutive Game

Sharks Hold Off A Ninth Inning Deacons Rally To Win 7-6

FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. (Mar. 10, 2009)  The No. 8 nationally ranked Nova Southeastern University baseball team defeated Bloomfield College 7-6 to win their 13th straight game and improve to 21-2 on the season. Bloomfield falls to 2-5.

Bloomfield scored first, plating a single run in the top of the first inning. Leadoff hitter Anderson Minyetty opened the game with a triple to right centerfield and came in to score on a groundout by Kevin Lauranzon.

The Sharks retaliated in the bottom of the first inning, scoring three runs on three hits and one Deacon error. Shortstop Dale Alberto (Sr., Davie, Fla.) and designated hitter Pete Simon (Sr., West Palm Beach, Fla.) had RBI hits in the inning for NSU.

The Deacons added a run in the top of the third, scoring on two hits and a NSU error.

Sharks left fielder J.D. Martinez (Jr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) was driven in by first base baseman Riaan Spanjer-Furstenburg (Jr., Coral Springs, Fla.) on a RBI single after leading off the inning with a double down the left field line.

Nova Southeastern scored three more runs in the bottom of the fifth on three hits and a Bloomfield error. Spanjer-Furstenburg, catcher Nate Goldstein (So., Coral Springs, Fla.) and right fielder David Robinson (So., Bunnell, Fla.) all had RBI's for the Sharks in the inning.

Bloomfield struck for a single run in the top of the eighth inning to make the score 7-3. The Deacons mounted a comeback attempt in the top of the ninth, rallying for three runs on three hits. The game ended when NSU closer Sean Albury (So., Nassau, Bahamas) induced a grounder to Alberto with runners on first and second base and two outs.

Third baseman Eric McCans (Jr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.), second baseman Dexter Butler (Sr., Key West, Fla.), Spanjer-Furstenburg, Alberto and Robinson all had multiple hits in the game.

Reliever Isaac Hicks (So., Ft. Myers, Fla.) earned to win to improve to 4-0 on the season. He pitched three scoreless innings, striking out five while walking none.

The Sharks will travel to Boca Raton, Fla. to play Lynn University at 3 pm on Thursday, March 12th in their Sunshine State Conference opener.
