#8 NSU Explodes For 23 Runs In 12th Straight Win

Sharks Set A New Season High With 23 Runs On 23 Hits

BOCA RATON, Fla. (Mar. 9, 2009)  The No. 8 nationally ranked Nova Southeastern University baseball team defeated the College of Saint Rose 23-5 to win their 12th straight game and improve to 20-2 on the season. Saint Rose falls to 2-5.

The Sharks spotted starter Jose Velazquez (Jr., Miami, Fla.) a three run advantage in the bottom of the first inning. The lead was extended to eight runs in the bottom of the second inning, as NSU scored five runs on there hits and a Golden Lions error.

After Saint Rose got on the board with a single run in the top of the third inning, NSU scored three runs in the bottom of the third inning. The Sharks exploded for nine more runs on eight hits in the bottom of the fourth inning. Designated hitter Pete Simon (Sr., West Palm Beach, Fla.) finished the rally with a three run homer over the centerfield fence.

Three runs were added to the Sharks total in the bottom of the fifth when center fielder J.D. Martinez (Jr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) hit his ninth home run of the season, a three run homer to centerfield.

Velazquez earned the win, moving to 2-0 on the season. A.J. Hillenbrand (Fr., Rockledge, Fla.), Drew Reeves (Fr., Ft. Myers, Fla.) and Jovahny Castaneda (Fr., Miami, Fla.) pitched in relief.

Martinez led the Sharks at the plate going 4-5 with a home run, double and two singles. He scored four runs and tallied six runs batted in. Right fielder Jonathan Escarza (Fr., Miami, Fla.) also had four hits, going 4-5 with four runs scored. Third baseman Eric McCans (Jr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.), second baseman Dexter Butler (Sr., Key West, Fla.) and first baseman Riaan Spanjer-Furstenburg (Jr., Coral Springs, Fla.) all had three hits apiece. McCans scored three runs with one RBI; Butler scored four runs with two RBI's and Spanjer-Furstenburg scored two runs with four RBI's.

Simon finished the night 2-4 with two runs scored and four RBI's. The Sharks finished the night with 23 runs, a new season high on 23 hits.

The Sharks will return home to the NSU Baseball Complex to host Bloomfield University at 6 pm on Tuesday, March 10th.
