No. 22 NSU Baseball Wins Ninth Straight
Sharks Defeat Palm Beach Atlantic 11-3
FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. (Mar. 5, 2009) The No. 22 nationally ranked Nova Southeastern University baseball team won its ninth straight game defeating Palm Beach Atlantic University 11-3 in play on Thursday evening at the NSU Baseball Complex. The nine game winning streak breaks the Sharks season high, as they previously won eight consecutive games from Feb. 6th- Feb. 17th this season.Sharks first baseman Riaan Spanjer-Furstenburg (Jr., Pretoria, Fla.) put NSU on the board first with a RBI groundout in the bottom of the first inning. Third baseman Rhys Roberts added a run later in the inning with a RBI single through the left side.
NSU added four runs in the bottom of the third inning, capitalizing on an error, two walks and two hits.
After Palm Beach Atlantic scored single runs in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings NSU put the game away in the bottom of the sixth with four insurance runs. Catcher Michael Hartley (So., Davie, Fla.) had the big hit of the inning for the Sharks, driving in two runs with a double to right field.
The Sharks would add one run in the bottom of the eighth inning as Spanjer-Furstenburg scored on a passed ball.
Starter Chris Hamper (Fr., Melbourne, Fla.) picked up the win for NSU, pitching five and one-thirds innings, allowing two earned runs. He struck out six while walking two. The Sharks bullpen (Isaac Hicks, Zach North and Sean Albury) combined to shutout the Sailfish the rest of the way, pitching three and two-thirds innings and allowing only three hits while striking out seven.
Spanjer-Furstenburg led the Sharks at the plate, going 3-5 with three runs scored and three runs batted in. Second baseman Dexter Butler (Sr., Key West, Fla.) also scored three run, going 2-4 at the plate. Hartley, shortstop Dale Alberto (Sr., Davie, Fla.) and right fielder David Robinson (So., Bunnell, Fla.) also had multiple hits in the winning effort.
The Sharks will remain home to host Palm Beach Atlantic in a doubleheader at 5 pm on Friday, March 6th at the NSU Baseball Complex.
