No. 2 Softball Takes Two From Flagler

Lopez goes 6-for-6 in the doubleheader

St. Augustine, Fla. (Mar. 5, 2009) - No. 2 Nova Southeastern University softball took both games of its doubleheader with Flagler on Thursday at Saints Field. The Sharks dominated game one, defeating the Saints 10-2 in five innings, and then posted a 3-0 win in game two.

In game one, the Sharks (23-6) scored their first run in the top of the first and then had their final nine come in the last three innings of the game.

NSU's first two runs came off two-out doubles from Lauren Lopez (Jr., Miami, Fla.). Lopez sent a double to right center in the first that drove in April Donachie (Sr., Orlando, Fla.). Then Lopez's second double sparked a five-run third inning as her extra-base hit went down the right field line and drove in Luciani.

In the next at-bat, Jessica Hernandez (Jr., Miami, Fla.) had a two-run single up the middle, allowing both Donachie and Lopez to score and make it a 4-0 game. Back-to-back RBI-singles from Jessica Rockwell (Sr., Middleburg, Fla.) and Katie Pepper (Sr., St. Louis, Mo.) drove in two more runs for the Sharks, who led 6-0 at the end of the third.

NSU went up by nine in the top of the fourth with a Lopez three-run blast to center field. Then in the fifth, Patty Rivero (Jr., Miami, Fla.) reached home off a Brittany Phillips infield single.

Flagler (12-15) got on the scoreboard with a two-run fifth inning. With two outs, Kaycee Lisa hit a fielder's choice, but an NSU fielding miscue allowed Brittney Hatem's run to count. Then in the next at-bat, Sam Boatner cross home plate on a Kaley King infield single.

Lexi Sarradet (So., Miami, Fla.) was credited with the win after allowing no runs and three hits in four innings.

Jana Owen had the loss as she gave up six runs off five hits in 2.2 innings of work.

In game two, NSU scored one run in the second, fourth and sixth innings. The Sharks capitalized on a Flagler error in the second inning that allowed Lopez to score on a Brittney Lamb (Jr., West Palm Beach, Fla.) fielder's choice.

Lopez had a RBI-doubles in both the fourth and sixth that drove in NSU's two remaining runs. With no outs and Donachie on first, Lopez ripped a double to left center which allowed Donachie to score in the fourth. Lopez then had a two-out double to center field, driving in Rachel Talenfeld (So., Fort Lauderdale, Fla.).

Dani Caron (Jr., Wellington, Fla.) pitched all seven innings en route to receiving the win. Caron gave up seven hits and struck out four.

Boatner had the loss after allowing three runs  two earned  off five hits in seven innings of work.

Lopez was a perfect 6-for-6 on the day, going 3-for-3 from the plate in both games. She also had seven total RBI, with five in game one and two in the second game.
