#22 NSU Baseball Convincingly Defeats #11 West Chester 9-1

Left Fielder J.D. Martinez Slams 8th Home Run Of Season

FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. (Mar. 3, 2009)  The No. 22 nationally ranked Nova Southeastern University baseball team had a convincing 9-1 victory over No. 11 nationally ranked West Chester University on Tuesday evening at the NSU Baseball Complex. The win marks the eighth consecutive victory for NSU and improves their record to 16-2 on the season. West Chester falls to 5-3.

West Chester got on the board first, scoring one run on two hits in the top of the first inning of Sharks starter Miles Mikolas (Jr., Jupiter, Fla.).

A J.D. Martinez (Jr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) RBI single through the left side evened the game in the bottom of the first, scoring Eric McCans (Jr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.). The Sharks would go on to score three more runs in the inning to lead 4-1.

NSU would go on to score four more runs in the second inning, the key hit a two-run homer by Martinez.

Third baseman Rhys Roberts (Jr., Parkland, Fla.) finished the scoring with a solo home run to lead off the fourth inning.

Mikolas (W, 3-0) would cruise after the first inning, allowing eight hits and just one run in six innings of work. He struck out seven and did not walk a batter.

Reliever Zach North (So., Miami, Fla.) earned his first save of the season by pitching scoreless seventh, eighth, and ninth innings.

Martinez, the Sunshine State Conference Player of the Week, led the Sharks at the plate, going 3-5 with a home run, two runs scored and three RBI's. First Baseman Riaan Spanjer-Furstenburg was 3-5 with two doubles, two runs scored and a RBI. Roberts also recorded multiple hits on the evening.

The Sharks will remain home to host Palm Beach Atlantic at 6 pm on Thursday, March 5th at the NSU Baseball Complex.
