Baseball Devours Palm Beach Atlantic 16-6

Jonathan Escarza Goes 4-6 With 4 RBI's At The Plate

FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. (Feb. 24, 2009) - The No. 26 nationally ranked Nova Southeastern University baseball team defeated Palm Beach Atlantic University 16-6 in action at the NSU Baseball Complex on Tuesday evening. The win improves the Sharks record to 12-2 on the season while PBA falls to 2-11.

The Sharks jumped on the Sailfish early as leadoff hitter Jonathan Escarza (Miami, Fla.) led off the bottom of the first inning with a solo home run. Three batters later designated hitter J.D. Martinez (Jr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) followed with a two run homer to put NSU up 3-0.

NSU added four runs in the second inning, with the big hit being a two RBI double off the bat of second baseman Dexter Butler (Sr., Key West, Fla.).

The game was put out of reach in the third inning, as the Sharks scored three more runs on three hits and a PBA error.

Nova Southeastern was led at the plate by Escarza, who went 4-6 with a double, home run and four runs batted in. Martinez (Jr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) was 3-3 with a home run, two doubles and three RBI's. Butler and first baseman Rhys Roberts (Sr., Parkland, Fla.) also had multiple hits on the evening.

Reliever Isaac Hicks (So., Ft. Myers, Fla.) picked up his third win of the season, pitching one and two-thirds scoreless innings. Scott Woodrey (So., Lighthouse Point, Fla.) earned his first save, holding the Sailfish scoreless for the final three innings.

NSU will host Flagler College at 6 pm on Friday, February 27th at the NSU Baseball Complex.
