Fiers K's 12 In Sharks 12-2 Victory Over #11 Valdosta State
Sharks Starter Goes Seven Innings, Allowing Just One Run And Six Hits
FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. (Feb. 22, 2009) - The Nova Southeastern University baseball team defeated No. 11 nationally ranked Valdosta State University 12-2 on Sunday afternoon behind the brilliant pitching of starter Michael Fiers (Sr., Pompano Beach, Fla.). Fiers (W, 4-0) pitched seven innings, striking out a season high 12 batters while allowing six hits and just one run. With the victory NSU improves to 11-2 on the season while Valdosta State falls to 9-6.Fiers had to work out of trouble early in the game. With two runners on in the top of the first, he induced a pop-up to second baseman Dexter Butler (Sr., Key West, Fla.) to end the inning. After back-to-back singles to start the second inning, Fiers buckled down, striking out the side to end the inning.
The Sharks would provide Fiers with a run in the bottom of the second when first baseman Riaan Spanjer-Furstenburg (Jr., Pretoria, Fla.) scored on a passed ball.
With Fiers cruising, NSU would add four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. The big hit of the inning was a two run RBI double in the right-centerfield gap off the bat of Spanjer-Furstenburg.
Spanjer-Furstenburg put the game out of reach in the bottom of the seventh, clearing the bases with a three RBI double. NSU would score seven runs in the inning on six hits and two Blazer errors.
Relievers Johvany Castaneda (Fr., Miami, Fla.) and Jose Velazquez (Jr., Miami, Fla.) finished the game for NSU.
Spanjer-Furstenburg finished the game 3-5 with two runs scored and five runs batted in. Centerfielder Brayan Valencia (Jr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) also had three hits for the Sharks.
NSU will host Palm Beach Atlantic University at 6 pm on Tuesday, February 24th at the NSU Baseball Complex.
