Lamb scores only run against Palm Beach Atlantic

Clearwater, Fla. (Feb. 22, 2009) - The Nova Southeastern University softball team advanced to the championship game of the Eckerd Spring Invitational on Sunday with a 1-0 win over Palm Beach Atlantic at the Eddie C. Moore Complex. However, the Sharks ended the tournament with a 6-0 loss to Valdosta State.

NSU capitalized on a costly Palm Beach Atlantic error in the bottom of the fourth. With one out and the bases loaded, Rachel Talenfeld (So., Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) hit a shallow fly to left field. As the Sailfish threw to ball to home plate to keep Brittney Lamb (RS-Jr., West Palm Beach, Fla.) from heading home, catcher Erica Walters missed the throw, allowing Lamb to score the game's only run.

Dani Caron (Jr., Wellington, Fla.) pitched all seven innings for the win and improved to 8-1 on the season. Caron allowed just three hits and struck out two.

Heather Laird had the loss after giving up seven hits in six innings of work.

Lamb was the only player with a multi-hit game as she was 2-for-3 from the plate.

In the championship game, Valdosta State used several critical NSU errors to put runs on the board. The Blazers first run came on a Shark miscue that allowed Claire Wamsley to score in the bottom of the second.

Valdosta State went up by two in the fourth with Joy Perry scoring off an April Hutchens double to left center.

The Blazers added three more runs in the fifth, including two runs that were the result of NSU fielding errors. The first two runs came on one-out, base loaded singles, while the final happened on a fielder's choice.

Brianna Collis received the win after throwing all seven innings for the Blazers and allowing just four hits.

Lexi Sarradet (So., Miami, Fla.) had the loss after giving up five runs - three earned - off six hits in 4.1 innings.

NSU returns to action on Tuesday when the Sharks open Sunshine State Conference play against Lynn. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. from the A.D. Griffin Sports Complex.
