NSU Baseball Smashes St. Thomas 14-0

Miles Mikolas Throws Complete Game Shutout

MIAMI, Fla. (Feb. 13, 2009)  Led by starting pitcher Miles Mikolas (Jr., Jupiter, Fla.), the Nova Southeastern University baseball team smashed St. Thomas University 14-0 in action on Thursday evening. The win improves the Sharks to 5-1 on the season while St. Thomas falls to 1-7.

Mikolas (2-0) spun a complete game, pitching to just two batters over the minimum, allowing only three hits and no walks. He struck out three batters and had his defense record three doubles plays on the evening. His effort earned the pitching staff batting practice.

Starting third baseman Eric McCans (Jr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) got the Sharks started where they left off a night ago, leading off the game with a solo home run over the left field fence. On the night McCans reached base in all seven plate appearances, going 4-4 with two walks and was hit by a pitch. The Sharks would go on to score two more runs in the first inning.

The Sharks added three more runs on four hits in the second inning to lead 6-0. Second baseman Dexter Butler (Sr., Key West, Fla.) put three more runs on the board with a three run shot in the third inning.

NSU would go on to score a single run in the fifth, two runs in the seventh and two runs in the eighth.

Butler finished the game 2-5 with two runs scored and four runs batted in. Center fielder Brayan Valencia (Jr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) went 3-4 with two runs scored and a RBI. Jonathan Escarza (Fr., Miami, Fla.), J.D. Martinez (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) and Riaan Spanjer-Furstenburg (Jr., Pretoria, Fla.) each had multiple hits on the night.

The Sharks will travel to Miami, Fla. to playa doubleheader vs. St. Thomas University at 1 pm on Sat. Feb. 14th.
