NSU Baseball Routs St. Thomas 21-3

Sharks Have Now Scored 54 Runs In Their Last Four Games

FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. (Feb. 12, 2009)  The Nova Southeastern University baseball team routed St. Thomas University 21-3 in action at the NSU Baseball Complex on Thursday evening. The win improves the Sharks to 4-1 on the season while St. Thomas falls to 0-6.

After NSU starter Michael Fiers (Sr., Pompano Beach, Fla.) set the Bobcats down in order in the top of the first inning the Sharks struck for a run in the bottom half of the inning on a RBI single to centerfield by junior Brayan Valencia (Pembroke Pines, Fla.).

The Sharks broke the game open in the bottom of the third inning, scoring three runs on three hits. The big hit of the inning was a two run opposite field homer by first baseman Riaan Spanjer-Furstenburg (Jr., Pretoria, Fla.).

NSU batted around in the fourth inning, scoring six runs on five hits. J.D. Martinez (Jr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) had a two run RBI double while Eric McCans (Jr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) had a bases clearing double down the left-field line.

St. Thomas struck for their first run in the top of the fifth inning on a RBI double by shortstop Kyle Radziewski.

NSU added batted around in the bottom of the fifth, scoring five runs on five hits.

After scoring a single run in the sixth inning, the Sharks batted around once again, scoring five runs on five hits.

Center fielder David Robinson (So., Bunnell, Fla.) led the Sharks with four hits in four at-bats. He scored three runs and had one run batted in. McCans and Martinez followed with three hits apiece. McCan finished with one run scored and four RBI's. Martinez had three runs scored and four RBI's.

Second baseman Dexter Butler (Sr., Key West, Fla.), Valencia, Spanjer-Furstenburg, shortstop Dale Alberto (Sr., Davie, Fla.) and third baseman Rhys Roberts (Jr., Parkland, Fla.) had two hits each.

Fiers earned the win, pitching five innings, allowing four hits and two earned runs while striking out seven. The win improves his record to 2-0 on the season. Ricardo Martinez (Jr., Miami, Fla.) pitched two scoreless innings of relief.

Radziewski led St. Thomas, going 4-4 at the plate.

The Sharks will travel to Miami, Fla. to play St. Thomas University at 6 pm on Fri. Feb. 13th.
