Barry Deals NSU Baseball 16-3 Setback In Season Opener

Newcomer Riaan Furstenburg Tallies Two Hits And An RBI In NSU Debut

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. (Feb. 5, 2009) - The Nova Southeastern University baseball team was dealt a 16-3 setback in their season opener on Thursday evening at frigid Feinbloom Field. The Sharks fall to 0-1 on the season while Barry evens it record at 1-1.

Barry took advantage of two errors to tally four unearned runs off NSU starter Zach North (So., Miami, Fla.) in the bottom of the first inning to lead 4-0.

Sophomore designated hitter Nikko Echevarria (Abqaiq, KSA) recorded the first hit of the 2009 campaign for the Sharks in the top of the third inning, hitting an infield single in the hole between shortstop and third base.

Back-to-back walks by Brayan Valencia (Jr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) and J.D. Martinez (Jr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) started a NSU rally in the top of the fourth inning. Riaan Furstenburg (Jr., Pretoria, Fla.) followed with a RBI single, plating the first Sharks run of the season. Dale Alberto (Sr., Davie, Fla.) also had a RBI single for the Sharks in the inning.

Barry would respond, gaining back their four run advantage in the bottom of the inning, scoring two runs on three hits. The Buccaneers would add one run in the fifth, three runs in the sixth, five runs in the seventh and one run in the eighth inning.

Alberto would drive in a run on a fielder's choice in the eighth inning to account for the other NSU run.

Bucs starter Charley Short went six innings and giving up just two earned runs to record the victory. North was tagged with the loss, allowing two earned runs on eight hit in four innings.

Furstenburg led the Sharks offensive attack, recording two hits and a RBI in his NSU debut.

The Sharks will host their home opener at 6 pm on Fri., Feb. 6th vs. Saint Leo University at the NSU Baseball Complex.
