Rowing's Fong and Garbaj Named CRCA All-Americans

Bishko, Fong and Lofria also named CRCA Scholar Athletes

(May 28, 2009) - Nova Southeastern University rowing team's Cindy Fong (Sr., Miami, Fla.) and Rachel Garbaj (Sr., Valrico, Fla.) have been selected to the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association 2009 Division II Pocock All-America Team. Additionally, Amber Bishko (Sr., Orlando, Fla.), Fong and Ashley Lofria (So., Chesapeake, Va.) were listed among the CRCA's 2009 Scholar Athletes.

Fong and Garbaj were among 10 rowers to receive All-America honors. Both Fong and Garbaj have raced in all of the Sharks' Varsity 8 races, helping NSU to six wins. The pair was part of the Varsity 8 boat that won the Sunshine State Conference Championship and the FIRA Championship. Additionally, Fong and Garbaj raced in two Varsity 4 races that the Sharks won. Last week, they were among NSU's eight All-SSC recipients. For Fong, it was the third-straight season in which she received All-SSC honors. It was the second-straight season in which Garbaj was listed All-Conference.

There were 31 rowers to be named Scholar Athletes by the CRCA, including Bishko, Fong and Lofria. Bishko was also part of the Varsity 8 boat that claimed six victories and the SSC and FIRA Championships. She also rowed with Fong and Garbaj as part of a Varsity 4 boat that won two races. Meanwhile, Lofria was part of four wins, three of which were done as a Varsity 4 boat and one as a JV 4 boat. Lofria was part of NSU's SSC Champion Varsity 4 and the FIRA Champion JV 4.

NSU returns to the water this weekend when the Sharks compete at the 2009 NCAA Division II Championships May 29-31. The Sharks were among four institutions to receive full-team bids. Competition at the 2009 NCAA Division II National Championships begins with Varsity 8 heats at 11 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. The top boat from each heat will automatically advance to the Grand Finals on Sunday, May 31 at 9:30 a.m. Meanwhile, the other two boats from each heat will compete in the Repechage on Saturday, May 30 at 10:30 a.m. for a berth to the Grand Finals. Varsity 4 competition starts on Friday at 11:30 a.m., with the winner of the heat automatically advancing to the Grand Finals. The remaining three boats will race on Saturday, May 30 in the Repechage at 10:45 a.m., with the top two boats going on to the Grand Finals.
