Besharat, Pierre Both Place Second as Men's Track & Field Competes at Miami Elite

Sharks register 12 Top-10 performances

athletic pic Coral Gables, Fla. (Apr. 11, 2009) - Nova Southeastern University's women's track and field team had five Top-10 finishes and the men's team registered 12 Top-10 showings as the Sharks competed at the Miami Elite on Saturday.

For the women, Erin Zampell (Fr., Naples, Fla.) recorded a second-place finish in the javelin and was fifth in the shot put. Zampell's mark of 117'7" (35.83m) in the javelin was also the top collegiate performance in the event. Meanwhile, she had a throw of 37'7.25" (11.46m) in the shot put.

On the track, Tara Haddock (Jr., Citrus Springs, Fla.) had a pair of Top-10 finishes. Haddock was seventh in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:54.43 and took 10th in the 800 meters with a time of 2:19.96.

Also on the track, Krystal Porter (Jr., Raytown, Mo.) ran 10:50.45 in the 3,000 meters and placed fourth.

On the men's side, both Bernard Pierre (So., Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and John Besharat (Jr., Miami, Fla.) finished second in their respective events. Pierre had mark of 154'5" (47.06m) to place second in the javelin. Meanwhile, Besharat clocked 9:05.41 in the 3,000 meters en route to finishing second.

On the track, the Sharks had seven additional Top-10 showings. Michael Wilson (Sr., Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) was ninth in the 200 meters with a time of 21.38. Chris Jacob (So., Naples, Fla.) ran 1:53.86 in the 800 meters and was sixth. Agustin Rey (So., Coral Springs, Fla.) had a pair of Top-10 showings on the track, finishing third in the 3,000 meters (9:11.47) and fifth in the 1,500 meters (4:05.43). Besharat also had a ninth-place performance in the 1,500 meters, crossing the finish line in a time of 4:07.20. Jonathan Junkins (Fr., Lecanto, Fla.) took fifth in the 3,000 meters with a time of 9:13.64. Carlos Rojas (So., Fort Buchanan, Puerto Rico) ran 12:14.54 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and placed fifth.

In the field, Pierre was also fourth in the shot put with a mark of 42'4.25" (12.91m) and Edikan Nkan (So., Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) took fifth with a throw of 41'1.75" (12.54m). Bryan Astudillo was seventh, recording a throw of 38'9.75" (11.83m).

NSU returns to action next Saturday at the UNF Osprey Challenge. Field events are scheduled to begin at 12 Noon, while running events starts at 3 p.m.
