Men's Track & Field 4x800-Meter Relay Wins at FSU Relays
Sharks cruise to victory in 4x800-meter relay
Tallahassee, Fla. (Mar. 27, 2009) - Nova Southeastern University's men's and women's track and field teams continued with competition at FSU Relays at Mike Long Track in less than ideal weather conditions on Friday. Delays had occurred during the day as inclement weather rolled through the Tallahassee area. Both the men and women picked up victories in the running events on Friday. For the women, Krystal Porter (Jr., Raytown, Mo.) ran a race-winning time of 18:31.70 in the 5,000 meters, beating out Devan FitzPatrick of Colby by five seconds. Meanwhile, the men's 4x800-meter relay team of Joe Peña (So., Jacksonville, Fla.), Chris Jacob (So., Naples, Fla.), John Besharat (Jr., Miami, Fla.) and Agustin Rey (So., Coral Springs, Fla.) clocked a race-winning time of 8:23.15, which was 15 seconds faster than Colby's quartet in second place.
NSU's women also competed in two field events on Friday. Erin Zampell (Fr., Naples, Fla.) placed third in the shot put with a throw of 37'3" (11.35m) and ninth in the javelin with a mark of 91'0" (27.73m). Kristina Labossiere (Fr., Sunrise, Fla.) took fourth in the shot put, throwing 31'7.5" (9.64m).
The men's team also competed in the 5,000 meters and two field events. In the 5,000 meters, Rey and Besharat both registered personal bests. Rey clocked 15:36.85 and finished fifth, while Besharat was ninth with a time of 15:43.72. Jonathan Junkins (Fr., Lecanto, Fla.) was 15th with a time of 16:20.55.
In the field, both Bernard Pierre (So., Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and Edikan Nkan (So., Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) both threw personal best marks in the shot put. Pierre took fourth with a 42'4.25" (12.91m) throw. Nkan had a 41'11.5" (12.79m) mark and placed fifth. Meanwhile, Bryan Astudillo (Fr., Miami, Fla.) was sixth in the shot put with a mark of 36'9.5" (11.21m). Pierre also had a seventh-place finish in the javelin with a throw of 151'10" (46.29m).
NSU wraps up competition at FSU Relays on Saturday. Field events are scheduled to begin at 8 a.m., while collegiate running events are set to start at 9:30 a.m.
