#22 NSU Out-Scores Palm Beach Atlantic 18-2 In Doubleheader Sweep

Sharks Defeat Palm Beach Atlantic 15-1 and 3-1 Behind The Pitching Of Fiers And Woodrey

(Mar. 6, 2009) - The No. 22 nationally ranked Nova Southeastern University baseball team won its tenth and eleventh straight games, defeating Palm Beach Atlantic University 15-1 and 3-1 in a doubleheader on Friday evening at the NSU Baseball Complex. The eleven game winning streak is the Sharks longest since the beginning of the 2007 season.

The Sharks spotted started Michael Fiers (Sr., Pompano Beach, Fla.) a four run advantage in the bottom of the first inning. The lead was extended to 12 runs in the bottom of the second inning, as NSU scored eight runs on seven hits.

NSU added two more runs on a two-run homer by third baseman Rhys Roberts (Jr., Lake Worth, Fla.) in the third inning. Center fielder J.D. Martinez (Jr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) came around to score the final run of the game after being hit by a pitch to lead off the inning.

Fiers (W, 6-0) held the Sailfish in check all game, allowing only three hits and one unearned run in the complete game effort. He struck out 13 batters while walking none.

Martinez, first baseman Riaan Spanjer-Furstenburg (Jr., Coral Springs, Fla.) and shortstop Dale Alberto (Sr., Davie, Fla.) all had three hits apiece in the Sharks 16 hit game one attack. Left fielder Robert Mesa (Fr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) and catcher Ryan York (Fr., Alva, Fla.) each had two hits and a home run in the game.

Starter Scott Woodrey (So., Lighthouse Point, Fla.) led the Sharks in game two, limiting Palm Beach Atlantic to three hits and one run in five innings. Relievers Zach North (So., Miami, Fla.) and Sean Albury (So., Nassau, Bahamas) pitched two scoreless innings to close the game. Albury earned his fifth save of the season.

The Sharks struck for two runs in the bottom of the first, scoring on an RBI groundout by second baseman Eric McCans (Jr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) and a single by Spanjer-Furstenburg.

Senior designated hitter Pete Simon (West Palm Beach, Fla.) slammed a solo homer in the fourth inning to add an insurance run for NSU.

Palm Beach Atlantic struck for an unearned run in the top of the sixth, but couldn't manage to sustain a rally.

The Sharks will travel to West Palm Beach, Fla. to play St. Rose at 6 pm on Monday, March 9th.
