Roberts Slam Lifts Sharks To 11-2 Win Over Flagler
Sharks Third Baseman Rhys Roberts Changes Game With Grand Slam In 6th
FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. (Feb. 27, 2009) With a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning Sharks third baseman Rhys Roberts (Jr., Parkland, Fla.) changed the course of the game with a grand slam off the scoreboard in left field to give the Sharks a 7-1 lead. No. 26 nationally ranked NSU would eventually win 11-2, improving to 13-2 on the season while Flagler falls to 4-10. Centerfielder Brayan Valencia (Jr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) gave the Sharks an early lead with a RBI single through the right side to score Eric McCans (Jr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.).
A solo home run to lead off the top of the second inning by Joey Rivera off of Sharks starter Chris Hamper (Fr., Melbourne, Fla.) evened the score at one apiece.
Roberts would score the go-ahead run in the bottom of the second, crossing the plate on a RBI groundout by right fielder David Robinson (So., Bunnell, Fla.).
After Roberts broke the game open in the sixth, NSU would score four more runs. First baseman Riaan Spanjer-Furstenburg (Pretoria, Fla.) blasted a two run homer in the seventh inning while Valencia had a two RBI single in the eighth.
Reliever Jose Velazquez (Jr., Miami, Fla.) earned the win, pitching two and one-thirds scoreless innings.
Valencia and J.D. Martinez (Jr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) led the Sharks at the plate with three hits apiece. Valencia had one run scored and three RBI's while Martinez had two runs scored and a RBI.
Roberts finished the night 2-4 with two runs scored and four RBI's. McCans, Spanjer-Furstenburg and shortstop Dale Alberto (Sr., Davie, Fla.) also had two hits.
The Sharks will continue their Alumni Weekend festivities on at 1 pm Saturday, February 28th with a doubleheader vs. Flagler College at the NSU Baseball Complex.
